42 current Western Hemisphere nations and their dates for abolishing slavery


Black slavery was as much a part of Canadian history as the often-cited record of the Underground Railroad. Slavery, within the larger context of colonization, was evident in all European settlements in the Western Hemisphere nations that formed the countries of the present.   This table lists the 42 current Western Hemisphere nations and their dates for abolishing slavery. Every country in the Western Hemisphere enslaved black people.

UN 2017 Report on Racism in Canada Discussion facilitated by Wilburn Hayden, Ph.D. Professor at the School of Social Work, York University April 30 (Monday) 7:30 p.m. First Unitarian Church of Hamilton 170 Dundurn St. South The latest UN Human Rights Council report on issues affecting African-Canadians (Sept. 2017) draws attention to structural racism that “lies at the core” of many Canadian institutions today, manifesting itself in the form of poverty, health problems, low educational attainment, higher rates of unemployment and overrepresentation of African-Canadians in the criminal justice system. A common understanding of resilience is the ability to overcome risks and being able to move forward in a right direction of positive and progressive change.  There are three presumptions associated with resilience: that it can be acquire by anyone if they follow a prescribed course of action; that equality exists amongst all individuals and communities; and that anyone can learn to take the right action.  With these presumptions comes an understanding that people living in marginalized or racialized communities affected by social barriers should be able to foster individual resilience just as easily as people living in privilege communities.
